i can't quite understand the thrill that so many ph.d.'s get when called doctor. seriously. someone needs to explain this to me, so that i might start finding some excitement about it. 'cause clearly, my salary is not the source of that joy.

today i learned that i got the fellowship that i had to go to a gazillion interviews, lunches and posters presentations for. the one that i had to submit myself to an oral examination of my knowledge of cancer as a disease. these news were supposedly made even better by knowing that several people had applied to this position, and that the committee deliberated for long before deciding i should be the guy.

this "amazing" opportunity, which by the way comes with the responsibility of attending seminars (yuck), journal clubs (boring), cancer symposia (i just slipped into a comma), and writing two progress reports a year (stressful), pays exactly $1000 more, before taxes, than my current salary.

now i get why they would never disclose the salary before hand. really, we postdocs are in the poop-smelling pits of the world. they know we know and keep us in the dark. if we knew, science would probably come to a halt.

i might be able to buy an additional blazer or two a year. i guess that's progress.

rufus passed yesterday. i am really sad. in fact, this is the saddest i have been after a pet’s passing in my whole life.

rufus kept me company in what has been one of the most difficult times of my life: the last year of graduate school. a year in which all of my energy seemed to dissipate into the air, a year in which everyone kept asking me about my plans just so that i could reply “i don’t know” or “we will see”. it was great to be around someone that wasn’t questioning my plans (or lack of) or probing my mental health. rufus didn’t care that i wasn’t living up to my expectations. he didn’t care that i was sad and moody all the time. it can be said that he didn’t care because he was a dog, but at the time, it was just what i needed.

last winter, i got to spend a significant amount of time with rufus when chris and melissa went on vacation to spain. ten days spent inside the apartment, while i typed my thesis away and took breaks to walk him or eat soup or drink coffee. that little winter episode was marked by the haze of me wearing pajamas all the time, and by rufus sleeping by the window as i carried along my day.

yet, i remember one clear episode. one afternoon i was really feeling like shit, and i decided to take ruf for a walk. i never liked saying that i was taking him for a walk; as sergio pointed out several times, rufus did a better job at walking me than the other way around. next to the taqueria that we passed all the time, i just sighed and asked out loud “why do things never go according to plan for me?” rufus stopped walking, looked back at me, walked towards me and reclined his head against my legs. he listened. he knew. like myself, he really didn’t have an answer. that moment meant a lot for me. it still does. it was the first time that someone provided sympathy without questions, without trying to explain. i am starting to think that he was the only one that ever could.

i am not religious, not even spiritual. yet, i hope that he is in a good place, with grass and things to sniff and trouble to get into.

new apartment, old ideas

after much deliberation, and in preparation for a new life as a postdoc/yoga instructor, i have decided to move out of my apartment. rather that opting to find something bigger, i want to find a smaller place. people always look puzzled when i say that. although my apartment is not huge, i have noticed that there is a lot of space that gets unused. that translates to a higher rent, and higher utility payments. my goal is to combine a higher salary with lower living expenditures, so i can go back to saving money in a consistent fashion, like the 28 year old adult in training that i am.

living small does not mean living less. in fact, living small means living more (at least to me), as you have constraints in how much shit you can have, freeing up money and time for other activities. the key to living small is to think about your space strategically, knowing how the space flows, and knowing that certain pieces of furniture or equipment will not meet your needs. style and color scheme are kept consistent throughout so that the whole environment feels like one, rather than fragmented little rooms without walls. take these examples from apartment therapy:

the other thing that i am excited about, even if these pictures really do not convey it, is minimalism. have less shit so that the stuff you have really shines through. i moved to my current apartment after a failed relationship with a hoarder. we literally had stuff everywhere, we didn't know what we had, and shit kept coming in. it really affected my energy. i have kept my apartment to a minimum, but sometimes it is difficult not to get more prints or more chairs. these images from design sponge have really inspired me to keep it simple.

now i just need a new apartment. i am open to studios and one bedrooms, provided that the bedroom is small. i called apartment finders and they had to ask me is i was sure about the small bedroom a few times. if you know of any leads in pilsen or roscoe village, let me know.

the hill side released their spring collection, and man, those textiles are way fucking good. i want like, all the scarves and ties. my mom and i designed a tie pattern and i made some awesome ties that are similar in shape (i even predicted some fabrics that they used) than theirs. that's great, as i won't have to end up giving blow jobs in the alleys of pilsen just so that i can have enough money to shed the ~$100 per item.if you have the cash, their full collection is available at hickorees.

something i do well, something i need to improve

yoga teacher training is going swell. in the sessions, we are required to say one thing we do well for every single thing that we need to improve. although i thought it was cheesy, i have been applying it to my life with great results. it's good to know that while i am not perfect, i can manage to do some things really well. this inspired me to start a series in the blog.

something i do well: i am a great teacher.

i have been teaching a new graduate student in the lab how to do experiments. i have been patient with her, approachable and knowledgeable. she is learning fast and forming ideas on her own. it reminded me of how little i knew when i started, and how people did not treat me very well because of it. now i have the opportunity to make things the way they should be, and i am taking advantage of it.

something i need to improve: people usually don't do the shit they do just to annoy me.

while i practice a lot of yoga in the same studio, that does not mean it is my studio. occasionally people i know will go to the studio, and they will see me shirtless, wearing spandex and sweating. this is not a personal attack on their behalf. sometimes, it can get as awkward as your boyfriend's roommate seeing you naked after taking a shower (!!!-what the fuck was he doing in the studio anyway-oh, right, trying yoga out).

i have just gone through (or maybe i am still going through) one of the biggest ruts of my life. i have had to deal with shit that includes, but is not limited to: working my ass off to meet the unrealistic demands of my boss, being evaluated with standards completely different from my peers, not being able to find a job, overall lack of direction combined with the heaviest depression i have experienced in years. overall, i have had to change my goals and plans around seven times in the last month and a half, which can only be done through a process of anger, followed by sadness and finally some compromising after bargaining.

it seems that i will postdoc for two-three years, while trying to expand my contacts in the scientific editing industry and also applying to aaas science policy internship in around a year and a half. i have had some postdoc interviews, and i hope to get an offer from the one lab i am most interested in. i have also started to train to become a yoga teacher. in short, i am expect to be in chicago for a couple of years, doing some (sort of) independent research, teaching yoga, and going from there.

to celebrate that i might (sort of) have my shit (sort of) together, i bought myself a barbour® x to ki to hooded hunter jacket. this is the most extravagant purchase of my life. i hesitated. my sister approved with some reservations. linzo fully approved, albeit a bit too late. i did it. i got it in the mail today. my life went from 6 to 100000. i am ready to take the world by the balls and say: i have this jacket. you can't take it away from me.

also, i ordered it on friday and they are already sold out. is that a sign or what?

i just learned that murakami had an exhibition at versailles towards the end of last year. although not a fan of either art, i was delighted to read about the parallels of louis xiv and murakami as artists that branded iconography in an effort to suppress collective memory. it also makes you think about how a brand could be considered art down the road, just like the conservative french art groups that were against the exhibition, who labeled it as "murder of our most scared culture". maybe, just maybe, the prada store in soho will eventually become a museum, and it will be folded into the vernacular of high art.

the closer i get to sergio, the more comfortable i feel with him, the more in tune with his brain i get to be is also the more scared i am of the outcome of anything. i keep having this nightmare in which he leaves me, and i am devastated, and i never get over it. i wake up feeling awful, in part because i don't want this to happen, and in part because i can understand how dennis felt when i left him.

funny how a new boyfriend can bring you to a more sympathetic place with an ex. i really don't understand why, but i feel like telling dennis about it.

the unseasonably warm days of february, combined with the fact that march is around the corner, that i am getting a pretty juicy tax return this year and the constant bombardment of fashion media with spring collections, i have decided that winter is over. i am sick and tired of my coats and i refuse to wear the sweaters that i was so excited to wear three months ago. the compromise is outfits in which, like above, i mix fall, spring and uh, winter all in one.

in other words, i will dress for the fall and/or spring with the most minimal winter necessities (aka hat). i will freeze and look great.

well, mother, i here is a non-comprehensive list:

1. i have been going to bed early and waking up late, in an effort to minimize the hours that i spend in consciousness. also, i minimize the hours that i could spend eating. my waistline is thanking me.

2. i have been going to around seven yoga classes a week. again, an effort to minimize consciousness and be thin. also, people are nice there.

3. i have been staying home at least one day a week, under the pretense of working on my thesis. truth is, i have been writing the same two chapters for the last two weeks.

4. when i go to work, i oscillate between stalking my boss outside his office or waiting for him to get me while seating on my desk. i take bathroom and coffee breaks.

5. i read ann carson's "essay on what i think about most" all the time. errors as metaphors are sweetly comforting.

6. i worked on my taxes. booyah is all i have to say.

7. lately i have been walking rufus a whole lot. it's really nice to be around a living entity that, when compared to mothers, boyfriends and friends, is not constantly probing my well being or giving me suggestions on how to live my life properly.

8. i have been trying to come up with names for my yet to be opened etsy shop. i like man research, but it has science undertones. also, i just realized gorillaz has a song with that title.

9. i have been replacing buttons in thrifted jackets and tailoring some awesome old shirts.

10. i have missed being taken cared of.

one cruel snowstorm dream: yesterday i took a nap around noon (nevermind that i woke up at ten). i was having a hard time waking up, and i slipped into this dream of waking up to find that the city had plowed all the streets in pilsen, that there was a pot of hot, vegan soup on the counter (with crusty bread to go with it) and that sergio was watching a movie on his ipad in my couch. turns out that he came to see me once the streets were cleared, found me sleeping, made the soup and was watching a movie, waiting for me to wake up. i got so excited that i actually woke up. imagine my disappointment when i looked out the window and still saw my car under two feet of snow, with no food to eat (or toilet paper to use) in the apartment and no boyfriend sitting in my couch. i had to resist the urge to cry and go back to bed.

now that i think about it, the bread should have given it away. sergio avoids gluten like the plague.

satellite prints. my friend rachel directed me (via her google chat status) to the amazing work of jenny odell. she collages cut-out images from google satellite of the same subject and makes, in my opinion, some of the most awesome images ever. i might contact her and buy the two i have shown here.
